CONCEPT:
When the Cook Out Back (COB) was first conceived in early 2003 the concept was simple; To produce a camp oven cooking competition to use as a channel to help re-introduce the Flinders Ranges to a broad range of visitors as a top camping destination.
With over 30 years combined experience in the Flinders Ranges, the COB committee was aware of dwindling camper numbers in the region. It was then the idea to produce an event that would not only be entertaining to watch and to participate in, but be used to remind people of the camping, bush walking and 4WD potential of the Flinders Ranges.
Today in 2007 the concept is evolving, our aim now is still to educate people on safe and “smart’’ camping practices, but also we are committed to providing a high class event that encourages people to visit and stay longer in the region.
This year’s event will see the implementation of more spectator events, that we expect will increase visitor numbers and help to raise the profile from a ‘competition’ to a small ‘festival.’
New events will include the inaugural “Great South Australian Damper Throw” and "Swag Rolling" competitions, the introduction of a demonstration tent, showcasing local expertise, wine tasting, beer tasting, and cooking demonstrations.
The COB has the ability to attracted up to 1000 visitors over its two day duration, with wide media coverage both intrastate, nationally and internationally.
LOCATION
The COB is held annually in the tiny town of Blinman in the northern Flinders Ranges. The main street of the town, camp ground, and surrounding area have been landscaped to suit the competitions purpose. A giant ‘creek bed’ kitchen is created with tones of rocks and gravel transforming the street and adjacent hill side. The picturesque and historic Blinman Hotel with its verandahs and characteristic front bar, will form a focus, the remaining street precinct will be the venue for exhibitions, wine tasting, food outlets, trade displays, demonstrations and live music.
